Session 9: The Sacraments
The Seven Sacraments are special signs and celebrations that come from Jesus and give us a
share in God’s life and work. Jesus continues to share his life and love with us through the Sacraments.Baptism is the first Sacrament we receive that frees us from sin and makes us children of God.
In the Seven Sacraments we receive the gift of God’s life and help, or grace.
The Sacraments of Initiation are the beginning of our life in the Church. They are Baptism,
First Communion and Confirmation.
In the Gospels we read about Jesus healing people. When we receive the
Sacraments, we receive God's grace, (or help and strength), through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Let's look at a reading from the Gospel of Luke.
With a Parent, read Luke 18:35-43 (Jesus heals a blind beggar.)
Parents, after reading, discuss with your child: Did the passage make you feel: happy, sad, scared,
loved… Why…
If you could be a character in the story, who would you be? Why? How would you feel if you were that
character?
Parents say: We’ve talked about the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and today we are going to learn about
all the sacraments.
Parents and children discuss: Which Sacrament have you already received?
In this Bible passage, Jesus establishes the first Sacrament we receive, Baptism, and shows we must
continue to learn about him and live by his commands. Let’s listen:
Read Matthew 28:19-20
When Jesus was 30 years old, he went to see his cousin John to be baptized. John was urging people
to grow closer to God and change their ways.
Parent reads: Matthew 3:13-17 (Jesus is Baptized)
Here is a great video about the Sacraments:

Every Sacrament has Matter, Form and a Minister. The "effect" of a Sacrament is the grace we receive.
"Duties" are actions that we do in preparation for, or as a result of, receiving a Sacrament.

Invisible things happen in the Sacraments! Sacraments are a visible sign of invisible grace, (gifts from God).
Let's end with a song to remember the Seven Sacraments! Watch and sing along:
Closing Prayer:
Parent: Let us begin with the Sign of the Cross.
Lord, you are so good to us! Thank you for the gift of the Sacraments, through them we grow closer to
you and receive invisible gifts that help us in life's journey. We are very excited to receive your REAL
presence in our hearts through the sacrament of First Holy Communion!
Amen.
