Session 7: Sacraments
Start this lesson by reading the following with a parent's help:
What are the seven Sacraments? Why does the Catholic Church have them?
Sacraments of Initiation: celebrate membership into the church.
The first three Sacraments are known as the Sacraments of Initiation. They are Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
Sacraments at the Service of Communion: the two sacraments that celebrate people’s
commitment to serve God and the community.
There are Sacraments at the Service of Communion, known as: Matrimony and
Holy Orders.
Sacraments of Healing: In these sacraments God’s forgiveness and healing are given to those
suffering physical and spiritual sickness.
There are Sacraments of Healing, known as: Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation.
Now, watch this brief video on the Seven Sacraments.
In this lesson let's focus on Anointing of the Sick.
Let's start with a reading from the Gospel:
Read with a parent: Luke 8:40-42, 49-56 (Jesus heals the daughter of Jairus)
Discuss with a parent: Why did Jesus want to help Jairus? Why is Jairus a role model for us?
(his great faith in God.) How can faith lead to healing? Can a person be healed in a way that is
not physical healing?
One of the Sacraments of Healing is Anointing of the Sick. Before this Sacrament existed, in
the Gospel of Mark, we learn that the Apostles anointed sick people with oil.
(Reference-Mark 6:13) While this Sacrament doesn't necessarily heal a person's illness, it
strengthens the person in body and soul, and unites a person to Jesus. It brings about peace
because through it sins are forgiven. The apostles used olive oil to anoint, and because of this Catholics also use olive oil to anoint in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick. See what the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick can look like in the video below:
Finally, this song will help you remember the seven Sacraments:
