Session 7: The Mass Workshop

Parents, read the following to your Level 2 child:

We are talking about the parts of the Mass! What do you hear and see at Mass? Mass starts with

the Introductory Rites. We stand and sing as the Priest(s), Deacon, Altar Servers and Lector

walk to the Altar, reminding us that we are a pilgrim people on a journey towards God.

We make The Sign of the Cross and say a prayer of penance (expressing sorrow for sins). Then we

say or sing a prayer of praise called the "Gloria."  Finally, the Priest says an opening prayer

Next comes The Liturgy of the Word. A reader called a “lector” steps up to the “Ambo” and reads

from the Old Testament. Then, a singer steps up to the Ambo and sings a psalm. Next, the lector returns

to the Ambo and reads from the New Testament. Finally, the Priest or Deacon steps up to the Ambo

and reads the Gospel. Let’s take a closer look at the Bible to find these parts.

Parents: Using the Catholic Student Bible, help your children to identify the Old Testament, the New

Testament, the Gospels of Mark, Luke, John and Matthew  and the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament.

About the Book of Psalms: These are ancient prayers written by a king named David.

After the Gospel is read, the priest or deacon will give a “homily,” which usually explains the readings in

the Bible.

Next, everyone prays The Creed, which lists our Catholic beliefs. Then, we pray a prayer that lets God

know what we are concerned about, usually the needs of our church and the world. We also pray for

those who are sick and those who have died.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the next part of the Mass. We remember in a special way Jesus’ Death,

Resurrection and Ascension.  Members of the assembly bring up the gifts of bread and wine. The priest

prepares the gifts and asks God to bless them. Then, the priest begins the Eucharistic Prayer, where

he asks the Father to send the Holy Spirit. This part of the Mass is called the Consecration. The bread

and wine are now the Body and Blood of Christ.  This is the mystery of our faith!

During the Communion Rite, we recite the Our Father and exchange the Sign of Peace. We say a

prayer asking for God's mercy and peace (called Lamb of God

Next, we receive Holy Communion

After we receive Holy Communion, the Priest ends the Mass with Concluding Rites: a greeting, a

blessing and then dismissal, where we are challenged to bring Jesus to others through our actions and

daily life.

Let's review the parts of the Mass by watching this video:

Let's practice how to receive Holy Communion.

Watch this video, then practice at home with a parent using

bread.
