Session 4: Choices
God has given us the freedom to make choices and all choices have consequences. Positive choices
strengthen our relationships with God and with others. Negative choices do the opposite. God wants to
help us make choices that will lead us closer to Him. (Remember that a “sin” is a choice that leads you
away from God.)
Below are some examples of some choices. Discuss with a parent whether each choice will lead to a
positive consequence or a negative consequence.
Harper decided copying her classmate’s answers on the test was the best way to get a good
grade.
Roy ignored his mother when she said to end his gaming and get some sleep. He decided to
secretly keep playing until 3 a.m.
It was a good thing that Angelina’s mother packed her favorite foods in her lunchbox, because
she was really hungry. Then she noticed how sad Carmela looked. Carmela was usually mean,
but Angelina decided to share half of her meal with her because she knew what it was like to
forget to take your lunch.
Ryder loved the skateboard Jack got for his birthday, and when Jack left it out by his locker, Ryder
thought about taking it. No one would see him and besides, Jack got everything he wanted and
took it all for granted. As envious as he felt of Jack, something he had learned in faith formation
class made him not touch the board.
In the Old Testament, the Israelite people were making choices that led to consequences that
caused suffering. The consequences of their bad choices led them further away from a
friendship with God. So God gave their leader, Moses, a list of rules for the people to follow
that would keep them on the right path to God. We call these rules The Ten Commandments.
Let’s take a look:
With a parent, read Exodus 20: 1-17.
Parent Note: Simplify “do not covet”- do not wish other people’s stuff was yours. Simplify
“adultery”- keep your marriage promises.
Think about this question: How do these ten rules help us show love and respect to God? How do the
rules help us show love and respect to others?
The Ten Commandments were given to us by God to help us, along with grace
(meaning God’s divine help), and the support of the Church, to deepen our friendship with God. Let's
learn more about The Ten Commandments by watching the video below:
We all make wrong choices sometimes, and the best way to move forward from a wrong choice
is to take responsibility for it. We also should seek God’s forgiveness and remember that God loves us
no matter what, and He is merciful to us. In the next video, Mrs. Christie invites us to take a deeper look
at the 1st Commandment, and how ancient people broke it by worshiping other gods.
Think about this question as you watch: What things/activities/interests do modern people sometimes
give more importance to than their relationship with God?
FYI- The story of "The Golden Calf" that Mrs. Christie reads is located here in the Bible: Exodus 32: 1-12
Think about the word “conscience." Conscience is a gift from God to help us know right from wrong.
Our conscience exists in our thoughts and it guides out decisions. Many factors help us form our
conscience.Who and what helps you form your conscience?
Lastly, how can we invite God into our conscience to help guide the choices we make? In this next video, kids discuss this idea.
