Session 10: The Paschal Mystery

In this lesson we are going to learn about the Paschal Mystery. What is the Paschal Mystery?

Let’s look in the Bible to find out.

Remember from last session we discussed that the word “Gospel” means “good news?”  There are four

Gospels in the New Testament. Today we are going to read from the Gospel of John in the New

Testament.

Read John 20:11-18 (The appearance to Mary of Magdala)

Mary of Magdala didn’t understand how she could be seeing Jesus, if she knew he had died on the

cross, but it was true! This is a mystery that we call The Paschal Mystery.  It is the mystery of Jesus’

suffering, Death, Resurrection (becoming alive again), and Ascension (going up to heaven body and

soul).

Jesus offered the greatest sacrifice: he gave his life to save us from sin so we could have new life with God in Heaven!

The word Paschal comes from a word that means “Passover.” Jesus died to save people from their

sins at the time of year when members of the Jewish faith celebrate Passover. Jesus was raised from

the dead and at the Ascension, returned to Heaven. He “passed over” from death to life so that all

people can have new life with God in Heaven.

We live out this mystery through the sacraments and the Mass. When you go to Mass, you are

participating in the Paschal Mystery! Let's watch and learn more:

Faith Words (in this lesson)

Sacrifice: giving up something out of love for someone else or for the good of everyone. Jesus sacrificed

his life for all people.

Resurrection: the event of Jesus being raised from Death to new life by God the Father through the

power of the Holy Spirit.

Ascension: when the Risen Jesus was taken up to Heaven to be with God the Father forever.

The Paschal Mystery: the mystery of Jesus’ suffering, Death, Resurrection and Ascension.
