Session 8: Solidarity
In this lesson we are going to look more closely at the Catholic social teaching of Solidarity.
Solidarity means we are all part of one human family, and because we are all connected
through our humanity, we are affected by the joy or suffering of others. We have compassion
for those who are in need and we are willing to share our time and resources to help others.
Let’s look at what St. Paul taught us about Solidarity:
In your Bible or at this link, read 1Cor. 12:12-26 (One Body, Many Parts)
Then watch "Undercover in a Bangladesh Clothing Factory"
As you watch, think about this question: What can I do to show solidarity with mistreated
employees of clothing factories like the one in this video? What parts of the garment workers’
stories stuck out to you? How does this investigative news report make you feel?
Many people who help to make our products work in unfair conditions. Garment workers
are just one example of those who struggle with unfair working conditions in other countries.
Fair trade is a trading partnership between countries that ensures farmers and artisans receive
fair wages. By purchasing fair trade items, we can help ease the suffering of the body of Christ
and recognize our solidarity with others.
Watch this video made by Catholic Relief Services about Fair Trade.
Think about it: Do you agree that ethical trade is a pro-life issue? Why or why not? How can
you show solidarity with garment workers in unfair conditions?
