Session 7: Signs of God's Presence
There are some powerful signs of God’s presence in The Bible. In the Old Testament, God
promises to be present to his people, and help them. In the New
Testament, God is literally dwelling among us through the life of Jesus, the Son of God.
Today we are going to learn more about the seven Sacraments. In our Catholic faith, the
Sacraments allow us to connect with God and share in the life of God.
Let’s look in the Old Testament at God's promise to the Israelites.
Read: Exodus 3:1-15
Discuss with a parent:
In the above Scripture reading, what did God want Moses to understand?
At the time that this story took place, Moses was the leader of the Hebrews. God made a
covenant, (a sacred promise), with the Hebrew people that he would lead them out of slavery in
Egypt.
The Hebrews, also known as the Israelites, understood that a sign of that promise was the
Passover meal. Passover continues to be a part of the Jewish faith and tradition today.

As Catholics we believe that Jesus’ Death and Resurrection became a new covenant, or promise
between God and humans. At the Last Supper, Jesus gave us new meaning to the bread and wine by
changing them into his Body and Blood. Through Jesus gift of the Sacrament of Holy Communion,
we share in the life of The Trinity. God lives in us, literally, when we consume the Eucharist at
Mass.
Discuss with a parent: How might you face a tough day differently after receiving the Sacrament of Holy
Communion at Mass, and being aware that Jesus is living in you?
Sacraments are signs that God is present in the world. Let’s take a look at what St. Paul
says about God’s presence in us:
Go to 2 Corinthians 6:16, 18
Sacraments are signs of God’s presence in us and with us. They are great gifts! The image below
is a famous panel painting called a triptych, created for a Catholic church between 1445-1450 by
Rogier van der Weyden in his workshop. It's called "Seven Sacraments Altarpiece." Look closely at the
painting. How many difference Sacrament celebrations can you identify?
Closing Activity: Answer the following question in this digital worksheet.
