Session 3: Catholic Social Teaching in Scripture

In this lesson, let's explore Catholic Social Teaching by looking at a Scripture reading

that inspired these teachings.

First, let’s review Catholic Social Teaching by watching this brief video.

We are created in God’s image. As such, every person has the right to life. They also have a

right to those things which preserve their dignity, or quality of life: food, shelter, health care,

education, and meaningful employment. Corresponding to these rights are responsibilities.

Because we are created in the image of the Triune God, we must respect the rights of others

and care for others according to God’s commandments and example.

Go to James 2:14-18 (Scroll down in the chapter to the correct verse lines, or use your

Breakthrough Bible.)

Think about it: What does it mean to say that "faith without works is dead?"

Read: "Three Saints Who Confronted Injustice Head-On" by Mike Best for BustedHalo.org.

The article is attached to this lesson in the Level 7 Google Classroom.

Think about it:

How did each of the saints in this article live a life rooted in Catholic Social Teaching?

How did these saints put their faith to practice?
