Session 4: Longing For God
What is faith? What does having faith in God look like?
When God says “honor your father and mother” we have to trust Him that He knows what ‘s
best even if your parents aren’t always perfect! When God says to “love your enemies” we have
to have faith in Him that he knows what is best. When we read what God asks us to do in the Bible
we have to trust Him that He knows what’s best. Even when we can’t see the end result.
Faith is not being able to see, but trusting the one who can. God can see everything and knows
everything. When we trust God, we have faith.
Consider this question:
Why is it a challenge to have faith?
Characters in the Bible were challenged to have faith. Some of them came face to face with
Jesus! Remember that water is a symbol of freedom from sin and rebirth into the life of Christ
through the Sacrament of Baptism? Let’s look at this Gospel story, where Jesus uses the image
of water in his teaching.
Read John 4:7-29 The Samaritan Woman Then, watch this dramatization of the story.
*Note to parents about the series "The Chosen": Below I use a documentary behind-the-scenes clip from the series "The Chosen" This dramatization is well-done and interesting, however it is my opinion that the writers take a lot of poetic license with the characters and events in the New Testament. This is why I chose a different movie clip, (above), rather than the one discussed below to show students a more Biblically accurate imagining of the conversation between the woman and Jesus. I suggest that if you watch "The Chosen" series, also read the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles for comparison to be able to distinguish where the writers took creative license.- Loren Christie
Why
is this story so important? This video below discusses this question and
gives context to what people in Jesus' time would have known about the
woman. The people discussing the story are on location in the Middle
East filming a series about Jesus' life called "The Chosen."
Write a
prayer to Jesus asking Him for the faith and trust that will lead to true
happiness. Ask Jesus for “living water" in this EXIT TICKET.
