Lesson Plan
– Level 5
Chapter 19-
The Call to Serve
Lesson Overview- Through
Baptism, all of us are called to spread the Gospel and build up the Body of
Christ. The Sacraments at the Service of Communion are Holy Orders and
Matrimony.
Lesson Objectives- The children
will:
·
Identify vocation as a particular way to answer
God’s call.
·
Describe the various vocations we are called to.
·
Begin to understand the need to listen for God’s
call.
·
Examine the Sacraments at the Service of
Communion- Holy Orders and Matrimony- and how they help build up the people of
God.
Table Time-
·
Begin with the prayer on page 257, (Isaiah 6:8,
and John 12:26; 13:4-5, 12-15). Discuss “What do you wonder?” questions:
1.
What kind of servant leader was Jesus?
2.
What kind of service does Jesus expect from you?
Catechist Tip- Saint Isidore the Farmer, canonized in 1622, is the
patron Saint of Spanish farmers. Paintings often illustrate Isidore at prayer
while an angel plows a field in the background. This image reflects the legend
that God rewarded Isidore with help in his work because the Saint put God’s
service first.
Read pages
258-259. Discuss: How do vocations serve God and others? Discuss the faith
term: vocation. Read about Saints Isidore and Maria on page
259. Clarify what it means to “offer” one’s work to God, and what this might
look like for the students in modern times.
·
Continue on
page 260. Discuss the faith terms: laity,
consecrated religious life and vows.
·
After
discussing the Sacraments at the Service of Communion on page 261, but before
the children begin the Connect Your Faith activity, show the children this
video on a Jesuit brother’s discovering his vocation.
·
Show the
class this vocation story of Sr. Maris Stella, (about how she made the decision
to become a Catholic Nun). At this link: https://youtu.be/80msIR5Zs6s
or
Hear the vocation stories of two Catholic Priests below:
Hear the vocation stories of two Catholic Priests below:
·
Ask: What
surprised you about this man’s/woman’s vocation story? How did he eventually
connect all the aspects of his life to his faith?
·
Page 261: Read and then discuss: Did you know that couples who choose to
enter the sacrament of marriage promise to “die to themselves” for their
spouse? What does this mean? (Explain it is about spouses sacrificing for the
good of each other in order to become the holy person God intended them to be.)
·
Go to
“People of Faith” on page 263 and read about Saint Francis Xavier, (1506-1552).
Discuss: How can you share the Gospel with others?
Optional Activities-
·
Complete the
handout, “Your Vocation.”
·
You may be
interested in sharing this song with the students. “You Say,” by Lauren Daigle.
At this link: https://youtu.be/oZvKJl1kK8g The
song lyrics are included in this video. Discuss with the students: How might
what God “says” to us in time we set aside for prayer and through reading
scripture influence our future vocations? How can you make time to hear God
speaking to you?
·
I Images Activity- Explain to the
children that Saint Francis Xavier sometimes could only use images to tell the
story of Jesus. Without using any words, have the children draw, or paste
images cut from a magazine, to tell the Good News of Jesus. Ask volunteers to
share their work and explain their choices of images to share the Good News.
