Lesson Plan- Level 4
Chapter 20- The Church in the World
Lesson Overview- The mission of the People of God is to proclaim the Gospel and to work for the good of all people. The Church is made up of people of many cultures, but all are united by their belief in Christ.
Lesson Objectives- The children will be able to:
·         Recognize that the mission of the Church is to proclaim the Gospel and work for the good of all people.
·         Understand evangelization as sharing the Good News of Jesus through words and actions in a way that invites people to accept the Gospel.
·         Appreciate that the Church is made up of people of many cultures and they are all united by their belief in Christ.
·         Explore the work of missionaries as those who spread the Gospel message and Jesus’ care for all people to countries around the world.
Table Time-
·         Alive in Christ, Chapter 20, page 267.
·         Pray the Opening Prayer and reflect on the scripture excerpt. (Isaiah 6:8, Acts of the Apostles 1:8) Discuss “What do you wonder?” questions:
1.       What is one thing you want to tell someone about Jesus?
2.       What unifies Catholics around the world?
·         Read “Make Disciples of All Nations” on pages 268-269, focusing on the scripture passage, The Commissioning of the Disciples).  Discuss the faith terms: Gospel, mission, evangelization.
·         There is a helpful video on YouTube that looks more closely at the word “mission.” Once you've completed the Catechist Edition instruction on page 269, show this video to the children. Talk with the children about ways that they already have, or could in the future, put their faith into action.  Here is the link: “Faith in Action Leads to Results: Catholic Relief Services”-  https://youtu.be/4a1zmVLK8oU It’s about 4 minutes long.
·         Turn to “People of Faith” on page 263. Read about Saint Junipero Serra, (1713-1784). Discuss: How can you apply St. Serra’s motto “Always forward, never back” in your own life? Go to this site for more information on St. Serra: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-junipero-serra/
